Florida, Blogs and book happiness

I'm beyond excited! Once I get off today (@ 4:45)  I will be hitting the road and going home to Florida!  It's been 7 months since I've been there and 9 months since I've seen my mom!  Just found out yesterday grams is in the hospital. She went to the doctor for a check up (she has cancer) and mom told the doctor she had been having problems breathing. At the doctor they checked her O2 stats and they are down below 90 so the doctor advised she go to the hospital.  I believe she had to stay over night but I'm not sure if she will be there for longer.  Keep me in your prayers for my travels and for my grams.

Since I'm off work tomorrow I've been informed I can pick up my check from the temp office today instead of Friday.  However I have a whole new set of problems.  What if the check's post dated and I cant cash it until tomorrow!  That would suck so bad since its a 14 hour drive down to Florida.  But if I cant get it cashed I guess there's no use in getting angry since there's not much I can do about it.  I'm just hoping that either one of the banks will be open and cash it for me or that walmart wont pay to close attention to the date and cash it for me.

I've really gotten into blogs recently and I like it.  I mean i can meet people who love books as much as I do and get a review on a book I'm planning on reading.  I can write out my feelings every day if I want to or every other month.  Some times I feel like I want to start a journal but then I never keep it up.  At least this way I can type what I'm feeling and move on.  I just wish I had more followers. :(  I have a profile on the site goodreads.com and I really like that site.  I can enter to win books, I can swap books if I want to and I can be involved in different reading challenges.  I can also be involved in a book club but I'm not sure how I feel about that one.  Since I have a ton of books I want to read as it is I dont want to have to read boring books other people want me to read.  I may try to start my own book club and see how that goes.

I get depressed some times b/c I think I'm bored with life most days but right now I'm feeling pretty good.  I have job even though it might be a temp to perm job that hasn't gone perm yet I'm still happy I'm able to support my family there was a year when I was so depressed I didnt want to get out of bed most days and now I"m starting to be able to pay my bills right when the bill comes and thats a great feeling and were getting to the point where we can start going out and actually having a life now and I know that is a huge excitement for my husband and I both since we havent done much in a very very long time.  It will be nice to get out with friends or have a date night.  And if life keeps going well we can start saving to do things to our house that we've been wanting to do.  Like new floors and remodeling rooms.  Another thing that gets me pretty depressed is since I've left home most of my friends dont talk to me any more and its hard to make good friends in a small town since everyone seems to be pretty clique-y with friends they've known since they were born pretty much.  So it's always nice when I let my old friends know I"m going to be in town and they let me know they cant wait to see me.  It would just be nice to know they think about me some times and check in see how I"m doing or even come visit me. :)

Right now I'm reading "Spooky Girl" by Lauri Notaro on my Kindle and its pretty good so far I'm loving it.  I have an actual paper book to read that I got from booksneeze.com for free and then have to do a review on its called "A Place Called Blessing" I'll be reading that and my Kindle on my long long 14 hour drive back home to Florida.  Until then keep me in your prayers and look out for my next update.

Shakespeare's Landlord

As of Tuesday 6/21 I've started reading the Lily Bard series by Charlaine Harris.  The first book in the series is "Shakespeare's Landlord".  As of last night I have red up till chapter 4 and its been a pretty hard read for me.  Not because its hard to read but because its slower than her other books.  Lily is nothing like any of Charlaine's other characters.  Lily's hard, quiet and guarded with a secret.  By the 3rd chapter things start to pick up since we've gotten past the "Who" and "Where".  Since this book has gotten good reviews I'm going to stick with it and since I dont like to leave a book unfinished.

Lily Bard has moved to Shakespeare 4 years ago and she lives a quiet life and is physically fit by way of Karate.  She cleans peoples houses for a living.  Lily moved to Shakespeare to get away from her former life.  Throught out the book (so far) you get glempses of her past.  I'll have to keep reading to find out more.  As of right now I only know that Lily is about 30, she comes with emotional baggage and some physical scarring.  She doesnt seem to have any close friends in Shakespeare since she seems to keep to herself.  She does have plenty of aquantiances from her line of work.  She owns her home she bought from Pardon who also owns the apartment complex on one side of her and the home on the other side of her inhabited by a handsome 30 something guy.  Lily seems to have a hard time sleeping so she walks the park across the street from her at night.  One particular night she was walking and noticed someone pulling her garbage rack through the park.  Just as she was getting tired and ready to come out from her safe shadows back home this person comes back and puts her rack back where they got it and went into the aprtments next door.  Lily is courious as to what this person was towing to the park so she did some looking for herself and found a bag and decided to look inside it to see what was in it and descovers a body.  Since she is tired she doesn't want to deal much with the police so she goes back to her house, puts new bags in ther garbage cans and calls the chief of police and tells him there is a body in the park across from his house.  She then lays down and goes to sleep.  The next morning she has to go to Mary's apartment and clean for her since her son pays Lily to keep an eye on her and to clean her apartment and everyone is abuzz talking about Pardon's murder.

That's as far as I've gotten so until tonight when I read some more....

**UPDATE** 6/27/11

Ok so I've read a little more.  This was not a major reading weekend so I dont have much to say about it.  I finally learned what happened to Lily to make her the way she is.  Strange things are starting to happen to her and some of the other people in Shakespeare.  Lily's not sure if someone from her past has come back to scare her or if its some one in Shakespeare who found out about her past life in Memphis.  I must admit it is getting a little more interesting now that Lily has some action going on in her life but it's still not a page turner for me like most of Ms. Harris' other books.

In other news I'm going home to Florida on Thursday for the holiday weekend and I'm super excited so I might have tons to write about on the drive down there.

**UPDATE 6/29/11**

Ok in the beginning of reading this book it was pretty slow. It took 4 chapters before it started to get interesting. But by the time I got past that part it finally became a page turner and now I'm pretty interested in the Lily Bard Series. I would say that if you like Charlaine Harris yo will like this book.

An Ice Cold Grave

I am a huge fan of Charlaine Harris since I red all of the Sooki Stackhouse books (except Dead Reckoning, its in my Kindle to read).  Since I had to wait for "Dead Reckoning" to come out I decide I would read some of her other series books. So far I have read "Touch of Dead" "Real Murders" Aurora Teagarden series book 1, "Grave Sight" Harper Connelly series book 1 and "Grave Surprise" Harper Connelly series book 2. And right now I'm reading "Shakespeare's Landlord" Lily Bard Series book 1.

If you're an avid reader like I am you will not start in the middle of the series but with the Harper Connelly books you could if you didn't mind starting in the middle.
"An Ice Cold Grave" is the 3rd book in the Harper Connelly Series.  I started off reading "Grave Secret" the first book.  "Grave Secret" basically explains who Harper Connelly and Tolliver Lang are.  A little bit of background on her and shares her "special ability"

The 2nd book "Grave Surprise" talks about the business she and her step-brother (Tolliver) have made based on her ability to located dead bodies from a freak lightening strike accident.

"An Ice Cold Grave" takes place in Doraville, NC about winter time.  Doraville is a pretty small town.  A local women has gotten with the police to see if Harper can locate the 6 missing boys.  One of the boys is the local woman's (Twyla) grandson.  The old sheriff assumed the boys were runaways and didn't look into the cases very well.  The new sheriff is out of options and agrees to let Twyla have Harper come see if she can locate the boys.

Twyla takes Harper and Tolliver to a few places the grandson was last known to be.  At each location Harper is unable to get a "buzz" on any dead bodies.  Just when I'm thinking this might be one of the times Harper can not locate a body Twyla takes them to one last significant location and its here that Harper is able to find all of the missing boys.

Once Harper's services are done she and Tolliver are ready to leave this town (finding the boys was pretty traumatic for Harper) and the media circus.  However the killer was not happy his secret was out and attached Harper keeping her in the town much longer than needed.  Since this is a small town and they gave up their room and all the other rooms were taken up by the media Twyla agrees to let them stay in her cabin on the lake.  While at the cabin the tension that's been building between Harper and Tolliver since the end of the last book finally comes to the surface in a way that I did not see coming!

Finally they are able to leave but Harper can't get the feeling that there is more to this story.  Tolliver has to keep reminding her she is not a detective and to leave it alone.  Harper agrees and they set on their way to give Twyla back her key to the cabin.  However once again she is attacked.  (funny since the killer is behind bars)...

So far for me this book has outdone the other two Harper Connelly books.  This book had so many twists and turns and just when you think you have it all thought out Ms. Harris throws a surprise at you and leaves you wondering why you weren't able to figure out the outcome.  I can't wait to read "Grave Secret"!
